At the 2026 World Cup, 48 teams play in 12 groups of 4. The top 2 teams from each group advance automatically (24 teams). The best 8 third-place finishers across all 12 groups also advance, for a total of 32 teams in the round of 32.

What does "on the bubble" mean in World Cup standings?

"On the bubble" means a team is in third place and currently positioned to advance — but could be pushed out by results in other groups. The cut-off depends on points, goal difference, and goals scored among all third-place finishers.

Third-place teams are ranked by points, then goal difference, then goals scored. The best 8 of the 12 third-place teams advance to the round of 32.
